Gap Campsite is located in active grizzly bear and black bear habitat. Bears may travel through or enter the campsite at any time. A Government of Alberta ACIMS search has identified a sensitive grizzly bear Element Occurrence intersecting the submitted project area.
Compliance with this agreement is a condition of every reservation.
1. Responsibility of the registered user
By accepting the reservation, I acknowledge that:
☐ I am responsible for ensuring that every member of my party understands and follows these requirements.
☐ I will supervise children and other persons who may not be capable of independently following the rules.
☐ I understand that bears are wild animals and that their movements and behaviour cannot be predicted or controlled by the Alberta River Rats Society.
☐ I understand that the absence of a recent bear sighting does not mean bears are absent.
☐ I understand that improper handling of food, garbage or scented items may endanger people, interfere with wildlife movement and contribute to a bear being injured, relocated or destroyed.
2. Mandatory pre-trip review
Before departing for the campsite, I will review:
☐ any notice provided by the Alberta River Rats Society;
☐ current bear warnings or wildlife advisories;
☐ any campsite closure or evacuation notice; and
☐ any special instructions applying to my reservation.
I understand that the Alberta River Rats Society may cancel or suspend a reservation before arrival because of:
3. What must be treated as an attractant
For the purposes of this agreement, attractants include:
4. Bear-line storage
The bear lines provided by the Alberta River Rats Society are the designated attractant-storage system for the campsite.
☐ I will hang all food, garbage, toiletries and other attractants from the bear lines whenever they are not being actively prepared, consumed or handled by a responsible adult.
☐ I will place attractants in durable, securely closed and leak-resistant bags or containers before raising them.
☐ I will raise the bags or containers fully to the marked storage position and secure the rope as instructed.
☐ I will not store food, garbage, toiletries or other attractants in a sleeping tent.
☐ I will not treat an ordinary cooler, plastic tote, dry bag, backpack, tent or boat as bear-resistant storage.
☐ I will not leave attractants unattended on picnic tables, near the fire ring, along the shoreline or elsewhere in the campsite.
☐ I will not overload, alter, relocate, cut or misuse the bear-line system.
☐ I will inspect the bear line and rope before use and report any damage or malfunction to ARRS immediately.
☐ I understand that a personal bear-resistant container may supplement the bear-line system only where ARRS has approved its use.
5. Garbage and waste
☐ I will pack out all garbage, recycling, food scraps, packaging and sanitary waste generated by my party.
☐ I will hang all garbage and odorous waste on the bear lines whenever it is not being actively handled.
☐ I will store garbage separately from clean food where practical, while keeping both secured on the bear-line system.
☐ I will not burn garbage, food packaging, grease, cans, glass, plastics, sanitary products or food scraps.
☐ I will not bury, scatter, hide or abandon garbage or food waste.
☐ I will not place garbage, diapers, wipes, menstrual products, food waste or other refuse in the outhouse.
☐ I will not throw garbage, grease, food particles, fish remains or other waste into the river or along the shoreline.
☐ Before departure, I will inspect the entire campsite and bear-line area and remove every item belonging to my party.
6. Cooking, eating and cleaning
☐ I will cook and eat only in the designated cooking and eating area.
☐ I will not cook or eat in a sleeping tent.
☐ Food may remain down from the bear line only while it is actively being prepared, served or consumed and attended by a responsible adult.
☐ I will clean tables, cooking surfaces, utensils and cookware promptly after use.
☐ I will immediately clean spills, grease and food residue.
☐ I will strain food particles from dishwater and pack out the particles with the garbage.
☐ I will dispose of wastewater only in the manner directed by the campsite operating plan and never directly into the river.
☐ I will not leave cooking utensils, grills, grease containers or food-contaminated equipment unsecured overnight.
☐ Clothing or equipment heavily contaminated with food or grease will be stored with other attractants rather than in a sleeping tent.
7. Fish, bait and angling attractants
☐ I will not clean fish within the campsite.
☐ I will not store fish, bait, fish remains or food-contaminated fishing equipment in a sleeping tent.
☐ I will not leave harvested fish or bait unattended.
☐ I will not place fish remains in the garbage unless they are sealed, secured and packed out in accordance with applicable rules.
☐ I will not dispose of fish remains at the campsite, in the fire ring, in the outhouse, along the shoreline or in the river contrary to provincial requirements.
8. Sleeping area
☐ Sleeping tents will remain free of food, drinks, garbage, toiletries, scented products and cooking equipment.
☐ Children will not keep snacks, candy, wrappers, toothpaste or other scented items in tents.
☐ I will keep the designated sleeping, cooking and storage areas in their established locations.
☐ I will not move tents, food storage or cooking activities into undesignated areas.
9. Conduct around wildlife
☐ I will not feed, approach, pursue, surround, photograph at close range or deliberately attract a bear or other wildlife.
☐ I will not block or interfere with a bear travelling through the area.
☐ I will provide wildlife with a clear route away from the campsite.
☐ I will remain alert for tracks, scat, digging, carcasses, damaged vegetation and other evidence of recent bear activity.
☐ I will make appropriate human noise when moving through dense vegetation, near blind corners or where river noise may conceal my approach.
☐ Children will remain under responsible adult supervision.
☐ I will remain within designated campsite and access areas and will not create new trails through wildlife habitat.
☐ Arrival and departure will occur during daylight where reasonably possible.
☐ New arrivals after dark are prohibited except in an emergency or where specifically authorized by ARRS.
10. Dogs and domestic animals
☐ I understand that dogs and other domestic animals are prohibited at Gap Campsite.
☐ I will not bring a dog to the site, including a dog kept on a leash or aboard a boat, except where accommodation is legally required and arranged with ARRS in advance.
This rule is intended to reduce wildlife disturbance and the risk of a dog provoking a bear or drawing it toward people.
11. Bear spray and preparedness
☐ At least one responsible adult in my party will carry bear spray that is unexpired, undamaged and immediately accessible.
☐ Bear spray will not be stored at the bottom of a pack.
☐ The persons carrying bear spray will understand how to remove the safety device and deploy it.
☐ Bear spray will be stored away from children, heat, flame and direct sunlight.
☐ I understand that bear spray may reduce risk but does not guarantee protection.
☐ I will maintain access to an appropriate communication device, recognizing that cellular service may be limited or unavailable.
12. Daily clean-camp inspections
The primary registered user will complete:
☐ an evening inspection before anyone goes to sleep;
☐ a morning inspection after food preparation or breakfast; and
☐ a final inspection before departure.
Each inspection must confirm that:
13. Bear sightings and incident response
If a bear is observed, I will:
☐ remain calm and not run;
☐ gather the group and keep children close;
☐ avoid approaching or surrounding the bear;
☐ provide the bear with a clear route away;
☐ secure attractants when it is safe to do so;
☐ follow current Alberta bear-safety guidance appropriate to the circumstances;
☐ leave the campsite when directed by ARRS or an emergency authority; and
☐ report the sighting or incident as required below.
I understand that a sighting at a distance does not automatically require closure. However, the following may require immediate evacuation and temporary closure:
14. Mandatory reporting
Report all bear sightings to ARRS
All bear sightings, tracks, signs and incidents associated with the campsite must be reported to the Alberta River Rats Society as soon as practical.

A bear that enters the occupied campsite, approaches people, obtains an attractant, damages property or displays concerning behaviour must also be reported to:

For an immediate threat to human life or safety:

☐ I understand that completing an online report does not replace contacting emergency authorities.
☐ I will not delay evacuation or emergency reporting in order to take photographs or complete a report.
15. Closure and evacuation
☐ I understand that ARRS may temporarily close the campsite before or during a reservation because of bear activity, wildlife warnings, an attractant incident or government direction.
☐ I will comply promptly with any closure or evacuation instruction.
☐ I will not delay evacuation to retrieve tents, equipment or other personal property where immediate departure is directed.
☐ I understand that ARRS may keep the campsite closed until the risk has been reviewed and reopening is considered appropriate.
16. Inspection and enforcement
☐ I agree that ARRS may inspect the common campsite, cooking area, bear-line area and other shared areas for compliance.
☐ I understand that unsafe attractant storage must be corrected immediately.
☐ I understand that a serious or repeated violation may result in:

By signing below, I confirm that:
☐ I have read and understood this agreement.
☐ I have explained the requirements to all members of my party.
☐ I accept responsibility for supervising minors and ensuring party-wide compliance.
☐ I accept responsibility for the food, garbage, toiletries, fish, bait and other attractants associated with my party.
☐ I understand that failure to comply may endanger people and wildlife.
☐ I have read, understood and agree to comply with the Gap Campsite BearSmart User Acknowledgement and Compliance Agreement.
